A Sydney family has launched a unique running challenge to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer.

Daniel, along with his two sons, recently set themselves a unique challenge: to run one kilometre for every dollar raised for prostate cancer research, awareness and support.

With more than $2,100 raised so far, the family is now committed to running over 2,100 kilometres together, with around 900 kilometres still ahead in the coming months.

Daniel’s father, Tim, was diagnosed with prostate cancer only after it had already spread. He died at the age of just 60.

“Dad didn’t get the chance for early detection,” Daniel says.

“If doing this encourages even one man to get checked earlier than he otherwise would have, then every kilometre is worth it.”

Daniel’s sons, Zach, 14 and Sam, 16, have also taken on the challenge alongside him.

Most of their runs take place along the beaches of Dolls Point and Botany Bay in Sydney, but the challenge has even followed them overseas.

Just ten days ago, Daniel was running while on holiday in Shangri-La, in China’s Yunnan Province, at an altitude of 10,500 feet.

“You definitely felt the altitude,” Daniel said.

“It really drives home the point that this is about pushing through discomfort, because the consequences of not acting can be far greater.”

The Family Run is still ongoing and will continue over the next couple of months, as the Coones clock up the remaining kilometres.

Regular PSA testing is now part of Daniel’s life, and for his sons, the run is about remembering a grandfather.

“I only got to meet my grandfather once, when I was three,” Daniel’s son Sam said.

“I didn’t really get the chance to know him. Hopefully, this can make a small impact on others."
