Australians impacted by prostate cancer are being urged to register in a nationwide walk to help reduce deaths from the disease, which claims the lives of nearly 4,000 Australian men a year.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia event, known as Walk for Him, will take place during Men’s Health Week from Monday June 9 to Sunday June 15.

People who register with a donation of $50 by Tuesday June 3 will get a free kit with awareness materials and the event t-shirt.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia CEO Anne Savage, is urging the community to sign up now.

“Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, accounting for 16 per cent of all cancers diagnosed and for nearly one in three cancers diagnosed among men.

“Sadly, too many men are suffering their disease in silence, without the support of a PCFA nurse or access to best-practice treatment and care.

“We would welcome the local community’s support with making a difference, helping us improve understanding of the disease so that men no longer walk alone.

“The Walk for Him is a great way to make a difference, helping us reduce high rates of anxiety and depression among those affected and promoting early detection so that we give men a better chance of defeating the disease.

“We’d love to see people signing up to join us in the Walk for Him for Aussie men and families impacted by prostate cancer.“

26,368 Australian men are newly diagnosed every year and 3,901 die from the disease.

“Five-year survival has increased from 63 per cent in 1990 to nearly 96 per cent today, but we have more work to do to defeat the disease,” Ms Savage said.

“If we apply the knowledge we have right now to detect the disease early and treat it rapidly and effectively, we can beat it.”
