Latrobe’s Biggest Ever Blokes BBQ has raised over $1 million for prostate cancer research, awareness, and support services, following another hugely successful event in June.
This year’s event, held in Morwell (Victoria) drew 500 guests and honoured the late Bruce Ellen, former Chair of the Latrobe’s Biggest Ever Blokes BBQ committee, whose leadership helped establish the event as one of the most impactful prostate cancer community fundraisers in the country.
During the lunch, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) Community Engagement Manager Linley Watson, presented the prestigious Max Gardner Award – PCFA’s highest honour – to Bruce’s children, Ashleigh and Nick, recognising their father’s outstanding service to the cause. Both delivered heartfelt speeches. Bruce’s brothers, Tim and Graham, also attended the event.
With comedian Tom Seigert as MC, guests enjoyed laughs from stand-up comedian Brad Oakes, a prostate cancer survivor, and international comedy star Arj Barker.
Retired AFL umpire ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain also shared his career highlights.
“This event reflects the strength of our community and Bruce’s lasting legacy,” Mr Ian Nethercote, Chair of Latrobe’s Biggest Ever Blokes BBQ, said.
“The funds raised have supported awareness, research, the purchase of specialist medical equipment, and a prostate cancer specialist nurse at our local hospital – something we are very proud of.”
Since 2013, Latrobe’s Biggest Ever Blokes BBQ has channeled community generosity into life-saving outcomes – funding critical services, life-changing research, and frontline care for local men and families.
“While Bruce may be gone, his vision and dedication continue to inspire, ensuring the event will change, and save, lives for years to come” Mr Nethercote added.
