Researcher and world cancer leader Professor Jeff Dunn AO has been reappointed as the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and University of Southern Queensland Chair in Cancer Survivorship, under a three-year deal that will see UniSQ lead the delivery of new guidelines for the early detection of prostate cancer.
The $300,000 funding agreement continues the work of the UniSQ Centre for Research Excellence in Cancer Survivorship.
Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s Chairman, Adjunct Associate Professor Steve Callister AM, congratulated Professor Dunn on his reappointment to the prestigious role.
“As both a researcher and a World Cancer Leader, Jeff is uniquely positioned to drive the work underway in the Centre for Research Excellence,” he said.
“In particular, Jeff has established the Centre as a world-leading authority on prostate cancer survivorship, harnessing a grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council to jointly develop survivorship essentials for prostate cancer care.
“The partnership project is expected to help transform the way we deliver cancer care in Australia and internationally.”
Professor Dunn thanked PCFA and UniSQ for the honour.
“This is more than just a title – it is recognition of the work we’ve done and are continuing to do in research and translation, working in collaboration with Australia’s peak body for men and families who have been impacted by the disease,” he said.
“My renewed appointment will allow us to build on the work we have done to help pave the way for the early detection of prostate cancer, with the imminent release of new guidelines related to PSA testing.
“Importantly, we will be leveraging evidence-based strategies to improve men’s vigilance and to ensure quality of life outcomes in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, empowering men to support their own long-term health and wellbeing.”
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, accounting for 15 per cent of all cancers and more hospitalisations than any other form of cancer.
Australian men with prostate cancer face a 70 per cent increased risk of suicide death.
