Vale Allan Cunningham: A compassionate man
The loss of the irrepressible Allan Cunningham on Sunday, August 24, 2025, is being felt far and wide. Allan was a much-loved husband, father, family member and friend. He was also a tireless supporter of his local community, his church community and a respected champion for every Australian impacted by prostate cancer.
In 2010, appalled by the prostate cancer mortality rates in his local Latrobe Valley, Allan co-founded the Latrobe Valley Prostate Cancer Support Group, in affiliation with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA).
In addition, he led multiple fundraising initiatives, including the Latrobe Valley Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch, which has raised over $1million for prostate cancer research and support services so far.
Allan’s enthusiasm and dedication have been such that over the years he attracted many high-profile Australians to the cause, including Merv Hughes and Mick Malthouse.
Recognising the vital link between research and reducing prostate cancer mortality rates in his local area, he strove to “shine a spotlight on the importance of men’s health and wellbeing.
Notably, Allan's advocacy catalysed research looking into ways to reduce mortality rates in regional areas. His efforts led to Dr Mahesh Iddawela investigating blood markers for aggressive prostate cancer treatments.
“We used to have some of the highest mortality rates from prostate cancer in the country, but over the years we have managed to reduce that statistic through public awareness, supporting the establishment of a local prostate cancer nurse, and fundraising for prostate cancer research projects,” Allan said in 2023.
“I am proud to be a part of a movement that is making a tangible difference for men in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland region.
In 2023, Allan was presented with a prestigious Max Gardner Award for Distinguished Service by PCFA, in recognition of his significant contribution to the community.
Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia Chairman Adjunct A/Prof Steve Callister AM paid tribute to Allan’s legacy.
“Allan was an outstanding member of the community and advocate,” A/Prof Callister AM said.
“He played a vital role in providing men and their families with information, comfort, and support, calling on his own personal experiences to ensure that men and their partners do not have to walk the journey of prostate cancer alone.
“Allan has made an exceptional difference to so many Australians impacted by prostate cancer, improving survivorship outcomes for all: a far-reaching legacy benefitting many thousands of people far into the future.
“Vale to a devoted community advocate and a compassionate man.”
