Albany Prostate Cancer Support Group Leader Greg Kidd teamed up with Genesis Care to put on the first ever Prostate Cancer Awareness Day in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.

“It’s safe to say the day was a huge success!” said Mr Kidd.

“We had 109 attendees from seven surrounding areas, with a mix of both males and females in the audience.

The group were one of 13 recipients of PCFA’s inaugural Community Grants Program, and promoted the October event through TV advertising, by handing out flyers and networking with local councils and other community groups.

Local businesses also supported the event by making donations such as morning tea and providing door prizes.

Greg and the group members reached out to a number of WA based professionals and specialists in their field to attend the Prostate Cancer Awareness Day and educate attendees on prostate cancer awareness.

Guest speakers included Dr Toby Lynch, GP (Aberdeen Medical Clinic), Dr Shane La Biance, Urologist (Perth Urology Clinic), Dr Qurrat van den Blink, Radiation Oncologist (GenesisCare), Naomi Mutinda, Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse (GenesisCare/PCFA) and Melissa Hadley-Barrett, Nurse Practitioner Sexology (Restorative Sexual Health).

Mr Kidd said the event gave a major boost to prostate cancer awareness in the region.

“Many of those who came were people who had been impacted by prostate cancer in some way and had accessed the services represented on the day,” he said.

“Those who attended the Awareness Day left with an abundance of information, with many describing the day as educational, professional, eye opening and well organised.

“As a result, we also had 10 new people join our latest Support Group meeting – we were thrilled and they were all really engaged.”

Thank you to Greg and the Albany Prostate Cancer Support Group for your commitment to saving lives.
