After launching with just seven men in early 2024, the Bargara Prostate Cancer Support Group grew to more than 100 registered members in 2025, including men, their wives, and friends.
The remarkable growth within just 12 months reflects both the need for local support and the power of community connection inside Palm Lake Resort Bargara and beyond.
Founder and group leader Danny Moyle was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early 2019. He underwent surgery in August that year, but over time, his PSA began to rise. In 2025, when it reached 0.2, he completed seven and a half weeks of radiation treatment.
“Fortunately, my last two blood tests in June and December 2025 have shown my PSA as undetectable. That was great news.”
In 2023, Danny and his wife moved from Yeppoon to Palm Lake Resort Bargara, an over-50s community of more than 800 residents, including around 400 men.
“Once we settled in, I started thinking there must be close to 100 men here with prostate issues at different stages,” Danny said.
In February 2024, he called an initial meeting to gauge interest in forming a support group. Seven men attended that first gathering.
Growth did not happen by accident. Danny and the founding members actively promoted the group through resident newsletters, noticeboards, informal information sessions and one-on-one conversations.
By normalising discussion around prostate health within the resort community, they created a culture where men felt safe to attend.
“Word of mouth quickly became our most powerful tool, and membership steadily increased throughout 2025 as more men and their partners recognised the value of open conversation and reliable information,” Danny said.
The Bargara group became affiliated with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia in November 2023 and received a PCFA Community Grant at the beginning of 2025 to purchase banners and promotional materials.
Danny says the support and encouragement from PCFA have been invaluable.
“Having PCFA behind us gave the group credibility from day one,” Danny said.
“The support, the guidance and the practical help made it much easier to get established. We didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. We could focus on supporting men.”
A balanced approach to support
The group meets monthly, alternating between men ’s-only sessions and guest speaker events open to partners and friends.
The men’s meetings provide a safe space for open conversation.
“It is a very valuable meeting,” Danny said. “Blokes can discuss their issues honestly and support one another.”
Guest speakers have included a radiation oncologist, a pharmacist, a dietitian, a prostate cancer nurse, a pelvic floor physiotherapist, and a representative from PCFA. This month, a counsellor will speak about the emotional impact of prostate cancer, reinforcing the group’s holistic approach to care.
All sessions have been well-received, strengthening the group’s reputation across the community.
Fundraising with purpose
In 2025, the group proudly took part in The Long Run, raising more than $[INSERT AMOUNT] to support prostate cancer research, awareness and specialist nursing services.
The fundraising effort brought residents together, sparked important conversations and reinforced the group’s shared commitment to helping other men.
“It’s not just about our meetings,” Danny said.
“When we fundraise through The Long Run, we’re standing shoulder to shoulder with men right across Australia. Every dollar we raise helps make sure no man faces this alone.”
Alongside The Long Run, the group continues to host local awareness and fundraising activities within the resort, strengthening both connection and impact.
Looking ahead
In 2026, the Bargara PCSG plans to extend its reach beyond Palm Lake Resort to serve the broader Coral Coast community, from Burnett Heads to Elliott Heads.
Danny believes the group’s rapid growth will have a lasting impact on the Coral Coast community, creating a culture where men feel informed, supported and less alone.
“If we can reach even one more bloke before he feels unsure about what to do next, then we’re doing exactly what this group was created for.”
