Support Groups celebrated as Australia's Governor-General begins national patronage of PCFA
Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia was honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, to a special reception at Parliament House in Melbourne in June.
The occasion marked the commencement of the Governor-General’s national patronage of PCFA, recognising the importance of our work in improving outcomes for men and their families affected by prostate cancer.
Among the leaders, researchers, health professionals and advocates gathered for the occasion were members of PCFA’s Support Group network — volunteers and community leaders who provide connection, understanding and practical support to men and families across Australia.
Their presence was a powerful reminder that progress against prostate cancer is not only driven by research, better treatments and earlier detection. It is also strengthened by the people who ensure no man has to face a diagnosis, treatment or recovery alone.
Across the country, PCFA Support Groups create welcoming spaces where men and their loved ones can share experiences, ask questions, access trusted information and build meaningful connections with others who understand the prostate cancer journey.
The reception also reflected on three decades of progress in prostate cancer awareness, care, research and support. What was once a disease too often faced in silence is now supported by world-leading research, improved treatments, specialist nursing care, stronger support services and growing national action.
PCFA Ambassador and prostate cancer survivor Will McDonald spoke movingly about the importance of community, alongside his son Alfie. GAZMAN CEO and long-time PCFA supporter Will Austin also shared his reflections on the value of standing together to support Australian men and their families.
PCFA National Chairman Adjunct Associate Professor Steve Callister AM joined Her Excellency, Mr McDonald and Mr Austin at the reception, which marked an important new chapter for the organisation and the wider prostate cancer community.
PCFA is deeply grateful to Her Excellency for lending her support and national leadership to our mission.
Together with our Support Groups, Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses, researchers, health professionals, fundraisers, advocates and community members, we remain committed to creating a future where no man dies from prostate cancer.
