Wynnum Golf Club members and local supporters will come together on Friday, 19 June, for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) Annual Wynnum Charity Golf Day, raising funds and awareness for Australia’s most commonly diagnosed cancer.
Now in its third year, the event was founded by Wynnum Golf Club member Ron Johnson after he recognised how many men in his local golfing community had been impacted by prostate cancer.
Mr Johnson said the event was created to give local men and their families a way to support each other, start important health conversations, and raise funds for PCFA’s research, awareness and support services.
“A lot of the blokes at our club have either had prostate cancer, are going through it, have recovered from it, or have passed away from it,” Mr Johnson says.
“You quickly realise how many men have been touched by it.”
The charity golf day will begin with player registrations from 6am, followed by breakfast, a group photo, and a 7.30am Ambrose competition. Players will then return to the clubhouse for guest speakers, lunch, prize presentations, auctions and fundraising activities.
Mr Johnson said the event was designed to be a fun and inclusive day, while also encouraging men to speak more openly about their health.
“It’s not about being a great golfer. It’s about getting people out there, enjoying the day, and talking about something that matters,” Mr Johnson says.
“As you get older, social interaction becomes so important. Golf is a great place for that. Men tend to open up out there on the course. They talk about health issues, and what’s going on in their lives.”
This year’s event will be supported by Ramsay Health Care, with Greenslopes Private Hospital joining as a sponsor.
Ramsay Health Care has a longstanding commitment to men’s health and urology in Queensland, with Greenslopes Private Hospital establishing Queensland’s prostate brachytherapy program in 2003 and later becoming the first hospital in the state to offer robot-assisted prostatectomy surgery.
The sponsorship comes ahead of the planned opening of Ramsay Surgical Centre in Cleveland in August 2026.
Justin Greenwell, CEO of Greenslopes Private Hospital, will give the opening address and present prizes on the day, while Professor Ian Vela, one of Australia’s leading urologic oncologists with a special interest in bladder and prostate cancer, will address players.
Mr Johnson said Ramsay Health Care’s support was an important boost for the event and the local community.
“To have Greenslopes Private Hospital and Ramsay Health Care supporting the day is huge,” Mr Johnson says.
“The new surgical centre at Cleveland will also make a real difference for people in this part of Brisbane.”
PCFA CEO Anne Savage commended Mr Johnson, his wife Colleen, the organising committee, Wynnum Golf Club and Ramsay Health Care for their support.
“Community events like the Wynnum Charity Golf Day play a vital role in starting conversations that can save lives,” Anne says.
“We are incredibly grateful to Mr Johnson, Mrs Johnson, the organising committee, Wynnum Golf Club, Ramsay Health Care, Greenslopes Private Hospital, and every player and supporter helping to make this event possible.”
Mr Johnson said one of the most important aims of the day was to encourage more men to speak with their GP about prostate cancer risk and PSA testing.
Mr Johnson said the event had reinforced the importance of regular health checks and encouraged men to speak with their GP about prostate cancer risk and PSA testing.
“It’s surprising how many blokes go for a regular check-up but don’t get a PSA test,” Mr Johnson said.To find out more about the Wynnum Charity Golf Day and to get involved, please visit: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1568936
