Walk on: Legends walk 100km in five days to raise funds and awareness of prostate cancer
Matt Burton and five of his friends - Michael, Dominic, Mark, his 15-year-old son James, and his 19-year-old nephew - recently completed The Long Blue Walk — hiking 100 kilometres over five demanding days to raise awareness and vital funds for prostate cancer. his 15-year-old
For Matt, a Sydney local, the challenge was never about personal achievement. It was about his father-in-law, Mick.
“I just couldn’t sit back and watch my father-in-law, Mick, be so sick with Stage 4 prostate cancer and do nothing,” Matt says.
28,868 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2025.
“I needed to set a personal challenge that was difficult," Matt said.
"By putting myself through the pain of hiking 100km, I could at least experience a small part of what he’s going through every day.”
The walk took place from 16 to 19 November and tested Matt both physically and mentally. But what kept him moving forward was the support behind him.
“Knowing my family and friends were backing me and helping raise these much-needed funds kept me going. I knew I was doing it for Mick and for everyone affected by this disease.”
Matt chose to fundraise for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia because he believes in their impact.
“I know every dollar raised goes exactly where it needs to make a difference, support for families, research and practical help. This is a foundation focused entirely on prostate cancer.”
His message to Australian men is:
“Don’t put off seeing your GP. A simple blood test can make the greatest difference in discovering prostate cancer early. Know your PSA score.”
Through his determination and heart, Matt turned every step into a statement for Mick, for his family, and for every man who needs to start the conversation.
