Following the passing of much-loved sailor mate Des Sward in 2024, prostate cancer became a cause close to everyone’s hearts at the Bellerive Yacht Club in Tasmania.

At last year's Banjo’s Shoreline Crown Series Regatta, fellow sailor and close friend of Des, Ian “Johno” Johnston, committed to shaving his head to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

His powerful act inspired his fellow sailors, Dave, his wife Karen, and Chris, to step forward and play their part in March.

Chris shaved his head, and Dave cut off his wonderful multi-coloured beard.

“After I shaved my beard, people kept asking what had happened to it,” Dave said.

“I told them I did it to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

"Often, the response would be, ‘I’ve had prostate cancer’ or ‘My mate went through that.’”

The shave highlighted just how many people in the community have been affected by prostate cancer.

Together, the trio raised $5,434.67, proving that even small acts, like shaving off an iconic multi-coloured beard, can drive meaningful change.

Massive thanks to Dave, Karen and Chris for their incredible support, and for proving that sometimes the boldest way to make a difference is to shave it all off and start a life-saving conversation about prostate cancer.

To start your own powerful fundraiser, raise just $50 before the end of March, and you’ll score a free Tough Get Tested t-shirt.
