Formation

The Hunter Prostate Cancer Awareness & Support Group was originally established in 1999 under the auspices of the Calvary Mater Hospital.

The group continues to grow and is supported by local people who give of their time on a voluntary basis and is also supported by a number of different organisations such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the Cancer Council of NSW with continuing support given from the Calvary Mater Hospital.

Activities

- We provide fellowship, support and understanding for those going through prostate disease

-  Meetings and contact with others who have experienced the various forms of treatments, without giving any medical advice

-  Encouragement for men to have regular medical checks

-  Guest speakers on topics relevant to prostate disease, research, care, rehabilitation & healthy lifestyle choices

-  Information on self-help strategies which may assist members to gain a sense of mastery over their illness

-  Information and awareness on prostate cancer, latest advances, and treatment options

-  Encourage wives / partners to attend as well, so they can talk to others going through the same process

-  Members also speak to different groups or at functions held around the Hunter region, promoting awareness of prostate cancer and our Group
