The Frankston District Prostate Cancer Support Group formed in the mid-1990s and has been running ever since to help men navigate their diagnosis, treatment and to offer support.

Current group convenor Kevin O’Malley took over the Group in 2016, after a diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2006 at the young age of 53.

Initially, Kevin was hesitant to reach out for support after his radical prostatectomy, but after attending his first meeting at Frankston PCSG along with his wife Sue, the pair have never looked back!

We caught up with Kevin to find out more about what drives him to give back to his community.

“I like feeling that I can help someone else, even if only in a small way. I have found the camaraderie and support of the group helpful in years gone by and now I hope to do the same for others recently diagnosed or living with cancer,” Kevin shared.

“The group is focusing on what we are calling a relaunch after a few quieter years with fewer meetings due to lockdowns.

“We have had a variety of guest speakers over the years and will continue to do so. At the moment we are busy spreading the word about the importance of getting tested and men speaking up about health and subsequent issues.

“Being a smaller group than some, we are very supportive of each other and will often have lunch together after the monthly meetings.

“The group prides itself on being open to those impacted by prostate cancer and their partners and family. We like to talk about the latest developments and treatments and also allow plenty of time for general discussion.”

Members of the group have also been recognised in the wider community, including a former member who was Frankston citizen of the year in 2013 and a current member who received the Victorian Senior of the Year Award in 2018.

Men, partners and family members are welcome to join them on the last Wednesday of the month in the Pavilion at the Frankston RSL, from 10:30 am until approximately noon.
