September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time for communities across Australia to turn awareness into action.
This year, some of Australia’s best-known landmarks are preparing to turn blue for prostate cancer, including Goulburn’s iconic Big Merino in New South Wales, Brisbane’s Story Bridge and Melbourne’s AAMI Park.
PCFA’s Support Groups can play a powerful role by bringing the campaign into their own communities. Whether you organise an event, share trusted information or tell your story, every action can encourage more men to understand their risk and speak with their GP about early detection.
Take part in The Long Run
Register a Support Group team for PCFA’s signature September campaign, The Long Run. Participants can walk, run or ride 72km throughout the month while raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer research and support.
The 72km challenge represents the 72 per cent of men who experience mental health challenges following a prostate cancer diagnosis but do not seek support.
Invite group members to join your team, families, local businesses and community organisations to join your team. Every kilometre can start an important conversation.
Light Up Blue
Ask a local landmark, council building, sporting venue or business to light up blue during September. Support Groups can also create their own blue display using banners, balloons, lighting or PCFA awareness materials.
Remember to take photographs, share them on social media and tag PCFA @pcfa_oz so we can help amplify your efforts.
Share the new guidelines
PCFA’s new national Guidelines for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer give Australian men clearer, evidence-based advice about PSA testing.
Support Groups can help ensure this life-saving information reaches the men who need it by sharing the community resources, discussing the guidelines at meetings and encouraging men to speak with their GP about their individual risk.

Tell your local story
Local stories can be incredibly powerful. Contact your local newspaper, radio station or television newsroom to explain how your Support Group is marking Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
You might profile a member, promote an upcoming event or discuss the importance of prostate cancer support in your community. PCFA’s awareness resources can help you share trusted information and bring your story to life.

Around 79 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every day. By taking action this September, Support Groups can help more men detect prostate cancer earlier and ensure men and their families impacted by prostate cancer know that support is available.
Together, we can turn Australia blue and work towards a future where no man dies of prostate cancer.
