Overview
Bargara Prostate Cancer Support Group- Bargara PCSG
Our meetings are held at 3pm on the fourth Monday of the month.
Meeting location is Palm Lake Resort, Bargara
About our Group
In February 2024, five men from Palm Lake Resort Bargara got together to discuss a common issue: prostate cancer. After looking at the statistics put out by Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia, it was obvious that upward of 200 men in the resort could be affected by prostate cancer. This was enough for us to go ahead and form a prostate cancer support group.
In November 2024 we officially became the Bargara Prostate Cancer Support Group being affiliated with Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia (PCFA). We now include men and their families on the Coral Coast from Burnett Heads in the north to Elliott Heads in the south. We have grown to 90 people registered with the group.
How we operate
We agreed to meet on the 4th Monday of each month. One month is a men 's-only meeting. This allows men to talk about their journey with prostate cancer and get support from others in the group, and where to seek support outside the group, the emphasis being, talk to your GP, talk to your specialist.
This is also a planning meeting for future events. If time permits, we review articles from “Blue Sky News “as we look at developments in detection and treatment.
On alternate months we organise a quest speaker and invite family and friends. Guest speakers have included, prostate cancer specialist nurse, pelvic floor specialist physiotherapist, oncologist, PCFA’s Community Engagement Officer Northern Region, dietician to name a few. Attendees at these meetings have found them very engaging and informative.
We are truly grateful to these people giving their time to come and address the group. We are also very appreciative of the Palm Lake management for their support in allowing these meetings to take place in the resort.
We promote upcoming meetings on the PCFA Support Groups Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/pcsgs) as well as on local Facebook pages in Bargara – Bargara Facebookers (https://www.facebook.com/groups/91613946639) and What’s on Bargara (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2299413256859125) .
