After two years of Covid delays, a group of Aussie outback drivers are gearing up for a major fundraising event in May to raise funds for prostate cancer research.

45 vehicles and crew will depart Bourke on Saturday May 20 for the Prostate Cancer Rally, in support of all Australian men impacted by prostate cancer, and their families.

After being postponed for two years due to the pandemic, Event Convenor Ross Alexander said he was pleased they were finally able to start their engines and drive support back into the outback communities.

The Prostate Cancer Rally will see drivers go from Bourke to Barossa over seven days, with overnight stops in Tibooburra, Innamincka, Birdsville, Marree, Wilpena Pound before concluding in the Barossa Valley (SA).

“More than 3,300 Australian men die each year from prostate cancer which is far too many.

“Early detection is key – and helping to educate our mates in the outback about prostate cancer is so important as they have a 24 percent higher risk of death from prostate cancer.

“After my own prostate cancer diagnosis in 2013, I wanted to give back and believe that medical research and science is the reason I’m still here today. This is why the Prostate Cancer Rally was born. Now in its fifth year, we are hoping to raise in excess of $200,000.”

Rod Wade, known as the Vintage Adventurer and Peking To Paris entrant three times in his A model Ford will be travelling with the crew.

In Australia each year, nearly 18,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, with one in six men likely to be diagnosed by age 85.

The funds raised by the Prostate Cancer Rally will go directly towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s vital research into prostate cancer treatments, early detection programs and cancer support services.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia CEO Anne Savage encouraged Australians to get on board and support the Prostate Cancer Rally by donating.

“Community support is invaluable to our work and enables us to achieve greater outcomes for men impacted by prostate cancer, and their families,” Ms Savage said.

“Everyone who takes part and donates will help to save lives.”
