24 January 2024

We’re celebrating a very important birthday with the Cairns Prostate Cancer Support Group turning 1 this January!

In their short time the Group has made a huge impact on men and their families dealing with prostate cancer in the region.

Beginning with a few like-minded mates who put together a Calendar Shoot called “She’ll Be Right, Mate” for prostate cancer, the Group was born with the shared goal of bringing attention to prostate cancer and the need to get checked on a regular basis.

Members meet on the second Wednesday of every month and every 6-8 weeks the Group hosts an evening meeting to welcome a guest speaker – including recently a spokesperson from The Black Dog Institute talking about mental health, first aid and the Black Dog Riders organisation.

“We have around 60 men on our books and are hoping to build on that this year,” says Group Leader Brett Duck.

“Cairns has about 2,500 men in the region that are dealing with this disease, so we have plenty of work to do to reach as many as we can.

“We want to offer our support and let them know what PCFA is up to and how they can help as well.

“Excitingly, we’ve also just had someone reach out about starting a support group in the tablelands -so that would be fantastic to see come to fruition.”

To all the members of the Cairns Prostate Cancer Support Group, we wish you a Happy 1st Birthday and look forward to future birthdays to come!
